three generations of shapers

1952

the cow lot, Wichita Falls

The Cow Lot was born in 1952 in Wichita Falls, Texas. Built on grit, fairness, and the quiet pride of doing things right. Founded by Nat Fleming and Gene O'Brien, it quickly became known not just for Western goods, but for Western values. Parker's grandfather, Dewey Orms, helped shape The Cow Lot into one of North Texas' finest Western stores, a place where craftsmanship mattered and customers were treated like neighbors, not transactions.

Pops takes over

In 2013, Dewey's son, Glenn Orms, revived The Cow Lot alongside his wife, Karen, re imagining it as a traveling outfitter. They took it back to the heart of Western culture, setting up at the country's largest rodeos and bringing tradition directly to the dust.

sink some roots

In 2021. The Cow Lot opened a permanent home just outside Denver. It's where Glenn perfected the art of hat shaping under Dewey's guidance, and where Parker learned the craft from both generations before him. Today, The Cow Lot still travels nationwide, but Denver remains its anchor; where three generations meet at the crown of a hat, and the work is carried forward, one shape at a time.

The watering hole

In 2026 we opened American Lore. Part workshop, part watering hole, and part gathering place for people who appreciate things made well and meant to last. Hats are shaped. Whiskey is poured. Conversations stretch longer than planned. We're not trying to recreate the past or polish it up for show. It's about carrying the good parts forward: craft, character, and a sense of belonging -and giving them a place to breathe. Come for the hat. Stay for the whiskey. Leave with a story.

hat Maintenance

GIVE IT A PROPER REST

A hat remembers how it's laid down. Keep it in a cool, dry place and never leave it flat or brim-side down. Rest it upside down on its crown, on a proper stand, or - best of all - in a well-made hat box, where light and dust do the least harm. A good box doesn't just store· a hat. It keeps it ready for the next long ride.

mind the weather

A little dust won't hurt it but water will. If your hat gets wet, let it airdry naturally. No heaters, no hair dryers, no shortcuts. Good felt prefers patience.

handle with respect

Always lift your hat by the crown, not the brim. The brim is shaped with intention, too much handling will soften what was meant to last.

keep it clean

Dust happens. Use a soft-bristled hat brush to keep the felt smooth and free of lint. Light bristles for light felts, dark bristles for dark. Brush gently in small, circular motions and let the felt do the rest.

refresh the shape

When a hat needs a little encouragement, light steam will do. Ease the felt back into form slowly and carefully, never over-saturate, never over heat. A good shape comes back willingly when treated right.
